Cantabile is a mixed-voice choir for adults and older students. There are thirty to thirty-five members who meet on Tuesday evenings in term time (September – early July). Rehearsals are held at The Pingle Academy, Swadlincote DE11 0QA (7-30pm – 9pm, with a short break for drinks!).
The choir has a varied repertoire ranging from the standard choral classics through to lighter, close-harmony pieces. From time-to-time, the choir shares the concert platform with professional guest soloists or instrumental ensembles. Rehearsal tracks are available for members to download should they require them, and a small amount of self-directed time is expected between rehearsals when necessary.
There are no formal auditions for the choir, but potential new members are invited to take part in two rehearsals, sitting alongside one of our members. During this period, we will be able to ascertain the extent to which your voice blends with the rest, and also what contribution you are able to make to the whole. It also gives a new singer the opportunity to decide if this is really something they want to do! All this takes place in a supportive way. We currently have vacancies for three first sopranos and two basses, but do please come along to see us if you’re interested!
A range of concerts is held throughout the year. Annual favourites include our summer performance in The Long Gallery at Haddon Hall and Christmas Brass & Voices. The choir also often performs in some of our local beautiful and historic country churches.
Cantabile is directed by Philip King MBE, former local authority Education Adviser with responsibility for the Derby & Derbyshire Music Partnership. He also formed and directed the Derbyshire Youth Chorale and South Derbyshire Children’s Chorale.
The choir is a very friendly organisation with opportunities for social activities as well as performances. Social highlights include our Christmas Dinner (and Cabaret!) at the Branston Golf & Country Club, and our Summer Party.
Cantabile is closely associated with the South Derbyshire Music Centre whose choirs and instrumental ensembles also rehearse at The Pingle Academy.
